Court, FBA plan seminar for new lawyers

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and the Federal Bar Association’s Eastern District of Michigan chapter are hosting the annual Seminar for New Lawyers, a “nuts and bolts” how-to-do-it approach to practice in federal and state courts.

The seminar, designed to assist recent law graduates in understanding the fundamental procedures followed in local courts, takes place at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 8 and 9.

It is not a prerequisite for an individual to be admitted to practice in the courts, but rather is a voluntary educational program that law school graduates are encouraged to attend.  Experienced attorneys wishing to attend the seminar are welcome. The seminar begins at 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 8, with registration and presentations on federal courts. The program continues the next day, with state court practice.

Organizers say the seminar faculty will include judges, practicing attorneys and court personnel.

The seminar price is $100 for both days with an attorney’s first year of chapter membership as a complimentary bonus. Admission also includes a luncheon on Dec. 9.

Reservation checks should be made payable to the FBA E.D. Mich., and mailed to New Lawyers Seminar c/o FBA Executive Director, PO Box 20759, Ferndale MI 48220.

Questiona can be directed to fbamich@fbamich.org or Brian Figot at 248.594.5950.

There also will be a ceremony admitting attorneys to practice in federal court coordinated with this program on Dec. 8, at 3:45 p.m. for those who have been admitted to the state bar and meet
requirements for admission to the bar of the District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

This is a separate ceremony which is processed by the U.S. District Court Clerk’s Office with a separate admission fee of $226 payable to the Clerk, United States District Court.
