The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and the Eastern District of Michigan Chapter of the Federal Bar Association are hosting the annual Seminar for New Lawyers, Dec. 8 and 9 at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse.
The seminar is designed to assist recent law graduates in understanding the fundamental procedures followed in local courts. Experienced attorneys are welcome.
The seminar begins at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 8, with registration and presentations on federal courts. The program continues Dec. 9 with state court practice. The seminar faculty comprises practicing attorneys, court personnel and numerous judges.
The price is $100 for both days with an attorney’s first year of chapter membership as a complimentary bonus. Admission includes a luncheon on Dec. 9 (usually addressed by the chief judge or the chief judge pro tem of the Wayne County Circuit Court; or by Justice Mary Beth Kelly of the Michigan Supreme Court – an NLS graduate). Attorneys also receive a word-searchable CD with form pleadings and memoranda expanding on the speakers’ topics.

There also will be a ceremony admitting attorneys to practice in federal court at 3:45 p.m., Dec. 8, in the U.S. Courthouse for those who have been admitted to the state bar and meet requirements for admission to the bar of the District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. This is a separate ceremony, processed by the United States District Court Clerk’s Office with a separate admission fee of $226 payable to the Clerk, United States District Court.
