Jackson attorney Richard Mills recently joined the firm of Marcoux, Allen, Bower, Nichols & Kendall, P.C. His practice is devoted to estate planning, charitable gift planning, and probate matters.
A Jackson native, Mills is the former principal of the Law Offices of Richard C. Mills & Associates, which until Jan. 1 was "of counsel" to Marcoux Allen, and is past president of the Jackson County Bar Association and the Jackson Areas Estate Planning Council.
He is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, where he also served as an executive editor of the Law Review and was a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit honor society. He also earned an MBA from the University of Detroit Mercy.
Mills serves on the Probate and Estate Planning Council, the governing board of the Probate and Estate Planning Section of the State Bar of Michigan, and is a Vice Chair of the Charitable Planning Committee of the American Bar Association.
He is a frequent writer and speaker on estate planning and charitable giving topics, including presentations to the Michigan Probate and Estate Planning Institute, the Michigan Auctioneers Conference, the Planned Giving Roundtable of Southeast Michigan, and the Nonprofit Network.
He is also a contributor to the Institute of Continuing Legal Education.
Mills was named a "Rising Star" in Michigan in the areas of probate and estate planning by Thomson Reuters and was one of the drafters of proposed trust legislation currently before the Michigan Senate, which, if enacted, would be known as the Qualified Dispositions in Trust Act. He also provided assistance to the drafter of Michigan's trust decanting legislation.
He serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations and charitable foundations, including the Jackson Community Foundation, the Ella Sharp Museum of Art and History, the Willis Family Foundation, and Catholic Charities of Jackson, Lenawee and Hillsdale Counties and is a Fellow of the Michigan Bar Foundation and the American Bar Foundation. He is currently the Vice President of the Kiwanis Club of Jackson.
His recent article, "Doing Good, While Doing Right by Your Client: A Guide to Ethical Considerations for Estate Planning Attorney Serving on Charitable Boards," which was published in the November/ December issue of Probate & Property magazine, was awarded the ABA's 2015 Excellence in Writing Award in the category of Best Practical Use Article in the area of Trusts and Estates.
Mills resides in Jackson with his wife and three young children.
