Clerks schedule voter registration event in Romeo

Macomb County Clerk/Register of Deeds Carmella Sabaugh and Oakland County Clerk/Register of Deeds Lisa Brown have scheduled a voter registration drive at Romeo High School on Tuesday, March 22.

“I encourage citizens to start voting as soon as they are eligible, to exercise their fundamental right as Americans,” said Brown. “By bringing registration services to the schools, we’re empowering young people to have their voices heard.”

Added Sabaugh: "My hope is that one day soon Michigan will get real election reform, such as online voter registration, no-reason absentee voting, early voting, and making Election Day a holiday.”

The in-person voter registration drive takes place in advance of the May 3 special election, which includes a school improvement bond proposition for those living in the Romeo Community Schools district.

The clerks noted that the advantage of registering with an election official at this event is that it counts as an in-person registration, meaning students may cast an absentee ballot to vote.

Students who register by mail must cast their ballot in person the first time they vote.

Students who will be 18 by the next election can register to vote, and should bring a driver’s license or other state-issued identification with them to complete their registration.

Voters must be registered by April 4 in order to vote in the May 3 special election.
