The Michigan Lawyers Chapter of the American Constitution Society recently presented “Justice Denied” at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. The program examined the story of Thomas and Raymond Highers, who served 25 years in prison for a 1987 Detroit murder they didn't commit. Valerie Newman (center) of the State Appellate Defender Office, who represented the brothers, discussed at the program how the justice system failed them and eventually freed them. Also taking part in the program were (left to right) Nate Fink of Fink & Associates Law, Tom Tallerico of Bodman PLC, Detroit Mercy Law Dean Phyllis Crocker, Thomas Highers, Jeff Raphelson of Bodman and Detroit Mercy Law Prof. Gary Maveal.
