Consulate General: Japan remains a leading foreign investor in Michigan

Japanese Companies Provide Over 39,000 Direct Jobs in Michigan in 2015; Japan continues as a leading foreign investor in the state

DETROIT -- The Consulate General of Japan in Detroit today released the official results of its 2015 Japanese Direct Investment Survey. The data, as of October 1, 2015, indicate that there are now 491 Michigan-based Japanese facilities which provide a total of 39,486 direct jobs. Ninety-five percent of these direct jobs are held by local residents.

Overall, total employment grew by 2%.

Japan continues as a leading foreign investor in the Great Lakes State.

Japanese investment is well distributed across 39 of Michigan’s 83 counties, but concentrated in the southeast and southwest regions of the state. The 399 facilities in southeast Michigan are primarily R&D, engineering, sales, and service industry operations; larger-scale manufacturing operations are concentrated in the southwest, particularly, in the Battle Creek area.

Consul General Mitsuhiro Wada, pleased with the results, commented, “As consul general, I am encouraged by the trend of growing investment by Japanese companies here in Michigan. With a 2% increase in year-over-year hiring, total employment at the 491 state-based facilities has nearly fully recovered to pre-recession levels. Japanese companies’ long-term commitment to Michigan—as seen in their steady employment growth at their R&D, sales, and manufacturing operations—is truly remarkable. I am confident that Michigan and Japan will continue to build upon their strong, mutually beneficial ties.”

He added: “As vehicle sales in the U.S. automotive market continue at record-level pace, Japanese companies continue to contribute significantly to Michigan’s improving economy and business climate. And, as the survey results indicate, they remain committed to producing, employing, and investing locally. Japanese companies are integral to the continued resurgence of this vital industry, and play a key role in the economic comeback of the great state of Michigan.”

The Consulate-General of Japan in Detroit was established in 1993 by the Government of Japan to serve in the states of Michigan and Ohio.
