It will be held from 1-4 p.m. in Room L-44 at the law school, located at 2630 Featherstone Road.
The purpose of such courts is to provide assistance to military veterans who have honorably served in the U.S. armed forces.
The VTC program, aimed at veterans who have become involved in the criminal justice system, employs a team approach that attempts to get beyond the legal problems to address the underlying physical, psychological, and substance abuse issues that may have resulted in criminal conduct.
Successful completion of the program may result in a reduced plea or reduction in sentence.
Seminar speakers will include :
• Lisa Halushka, Cooley assistant dean and professor
• Kara Jacquemain, 41B District Court probation officer and case manager
• Former 51st District Court Judge Jodi Debbrecht Switalski
• Retired 54B District Court Judge David Jordan
• John Caterino, former 54B District Court mentor coordinator
• Lynn Hendges from the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency.
The aim of the seminar, organizers say, is to provide an overview on their establishment and an update on their current status within the State of Michigan.
Jordan is participating in the creation of a manual regarding the policies and procedures for the Veteran Mentors.
Additional courts are being established throughout the state.
There is no charge to attend the event. Anyone planning to attend is asked to contact John E. Walus at jewalus@aol.com.
