Carrie Cousino graduated from Michigan State University in 2006 with a bachelor of Science and a specialization in International business. While at MSU, she was a member of the varsity softball team. After graduation, she attended Michigan State University College of Law, graduating magna cum laude in 2009.
Cousino began working for the Abood Law Firm in East Lansing as a law clerk in 2007 and was admitted to the State Bar in 2010. In 2012, the Abood Law Firm opened up an office in Birmingham, and Cousino worked between both offices. While she has since relocated to South Carolina, she continues to work remotely for the Abood Law Firm. Carrie’s main area of
practice is criminal defense, including drunk driving cases, along with appellate work.
Cousino and her husband, Scott, welcomed a baby boy last August. When she isn’t working, she spends her free time with her family enjoying the outdoors camping, going to the beach, and golfing.

What advice do you have for someone considering law school? Work hard to maintain a healthy school/life balance and don’t give up your hobbies. Create a schedule that includes time for outside of school activities whether it is working out, attending (MSU) sporting events, or spending time with friends. It will help make your law school experience much more enjoyable and prevent you from going crazy in the process.
You live in South Carolina while employed at Abood Law Firm in Ingham County. How do you make that work? At first, I found it challenging not being in the office. However, now that I have gotten used to it, my job and responsibilities really haven’t changed much since moving from Michigan. My responsibilities now consist primarily of research and drafting pleadings, motions, and briefs. One change I made that has allowed for a smooth transition is more communication with our incredible support staff and paying even closer attention to upcoming filing deadlines, conflicts, etc.

What would you say to your 16-year-old self? Don’t worry about what you “should” be doing as far as what classes to take or future plans and goals. Listen to yourself and follow your heart. Oh…. and definitely throw out your Velcro pocket jeans.
What do you do to relax? I love to go to the beach with a good book.
How would you describe your home? Classic with a slightly modern touch.
If you were starting all over again and couldn’t go into law, what career path would you choose? I’ve always had a passion for animals, so something in an animal related field, such as animal rescue or being a veterinarian.
