DETROIT (AP) — A man accused of shooting and wounding a federal judge in Detroit turned down a plea deal on the first day of trial.
The Detroit News reports that Kevin Andre Smith wanted a deal that would resolve charges in state court and an unrelated carjacking case in federal court. Wayne County assistant prosecutor Robert Moran told a judge Monday that federal authorities won’t dismiss their case.
Smith is accused of shooting Judge Terrence Berg in the leg outside his home last year. The shooting wasn’t related to Berg’s work as a judge.
He lives in Detroit but works at the federal courthouse in Flint.
The 23-year-old Smith likely faces decades in prison if he’s convicted of attempted murder and other charges.
