Varnum adds attorney in tax practice, and sees Ashby named major player in mergers/acquisitions
Erin H. Haney has joined Varnum’s Tax Law Team, and will work out of the Grand Rapids office.
Haney is both a lawyer and a Certified Public Accountant who formerly worked for the Michigan Department of Treasury completing business tax audits. She was a tax consultant for a major accounting firm prior to pursuing a career in law, and is experienced in preparing tax returns for corporations, partnerships, individuals and non-profits.
Haney received her J.D. from Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School, graduating magna cum laud. She was an editor for WMU Cooley Law Review, received an award for highest first-semester GPA as well as ten Certificates of Merit for various courses. She was also a research assistant, reviewing major portions of the 2012 Guidebook to Michigan Taxes.
Haney’s undergraduate degrees in English and Business Admini-stration in Accounting were from Grand Valley State University, where she graduated magna cum laude and received many awards.
In addition, Varnum corporate attorney Seth Ashby has been recognized as a major player in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the May 2016 edition of Leader's Edge, a special publication of the Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers.
Ashby was one of five attorneys recognized this year. Over the past three years, among other transactions, Ashby has worked on roll-up acquisitions of about 70 insurance brokerage agencies totaling over $1 billion in upfront transactional value for a private equity-sponsored firm.
Ashby's practice also focuses on private equity, securities, distressed asset/restructuring, and commercial transactions, as well as advising on general corporate matters. He has been recognized as a Super Lawyers Rising Star since 2012.
