The law firm of Warner Norcross & Judd LLP has selected The Arrival by Shaun Tan as the 2016 choice for its One Book, One Firm series.

The One Book, One Firm program explores diversity and inclusion issues during a summer lunch-and-learn program. Diversity Partner Rodney Martin launched the annual event in 2008 as a way to model the success of community reading programs that encourage all residents of a city to read and discuss the same book.

“This year’s selection is unlike any other book chosen so far,” Martin said. “The Arrival is a graphic novel where Tan uses 128 pages of compelling, wordless drawings to express the immigrant experience. An artist and filmmaker from Australia who describes himself as ‘half-Chinese,’ Tan wanted his work to explore the sense of ‘belonging.’ ”

A previous work by Tan, The Lost Thing, was adapted to a short animated film for which Tan was one of the directors, winning the 2011 Academy Award in that category. The firm will meet to discuss the book at a luncheon on July 12.

Also, as a special part of this year’s program, Nardos Osterhart will present her one-woman show, Halfrican, on June 10 for the attorneys and staff members from all eight Warner Norcross offices across the state. Osterhart, who by day is the head of nursing at Spectrum Health’s Blodgett Hospital, presents the immigrant experience, culture shock and fitting in through her poignant stories and stand-up comedy; in 2013 she won a competition as “Funniest Person in Grand Rapids.”

Previous One Book, One Firm works have included: Some of My Best Friends Are Black: The Strange History of Integration of America, by Tanner Colby; Stealing Buddha’s Dinner, by Bich Minh Nguyen; and The Female Vision: Women’s Real Power at Work by Sally Helgesen and Julie Johnson.

Each year the firm also develops a list of recommended fiction and non-fiction books about diversity and inclusion. This year those titles include, among others, Between the World and Me, My Beloved World, Lowland, and Dancing with Butterflies.
