Police: Detroit-area man held, wanted to kill cops

CENTER LINE, Mich. (AP) — Police seized a dozen rifles and six handguns from the home of a suburban Detroit man after a witness reported the man said he wanted to kill police officers, authorities said Saturday.

The man made the threat during a mental health discussion and has been committed to a mental health facility, Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green told The Detroit News.

“He commented during a session that he wanted to kill a bunch of police officers,” Green said. “The third party then reported it to police.” The tipster told police the man said he “wanted to do something big like in Dallas,” Green said.

The house in Center Line, north of Detroit, was searched Friday. Warren officers pulled over the man’s vehicle. He hasn’t been charged.

The case also is being investigated by Center Line police.

Many police agencies across the country are taking extra precautions after fatal shootings of officers. The police shootings followed fatal shootings of black men by officers in Baton Rouge and outside St. Paul, Minnesota.
“The threat against police officers is very real,” Detroit Police Chief James Craig told The Detroit News.

Four men have been arrested by Detroit police over the past two weeks after reported online threats against officers.

Monroe authorities: Suspect arrested in Maybee woman’s death

MONROE, Mich. (AP) — Monroe County authorities say a suspect has been arrested in the death of a 22-year-old Michigan woman whose remains were found six months after she disappeared from a Halloween party.
The Monroe News says a 27-year-old Newport man was arrested Friday afternoon and was expected to face charges Monday.

Chelsea Bruck of Maybee went missing Oct. 26, 2014, after attending a large party in Monroe County’s Frenchtown Township. Her costume was found April 5 at an abandoned industrial site in Flat Rock. Her remains were found in a grave April 24 on a wooded lot in Ash Township.

The Michigan State Police recently linked crime scene evidence to the suspect, and the man told investigators he was involved in Bruck’s murder.
Sheriff Dale Malone says the man acted alone.

Michigan pays legal fees for Detroit Public Schools

DETROIT (AP) — The state Department of Treasury says it will pay more than $300,000 in legal fees to sue two Detroit Public Schools teachers for what the district alleges was their roles in instigating massive teacher sickouts.

The Detroit News reports Treasury Department spokesman Jeremy Sampson said in an email that the agency understands the school district’s financial situation and has been assisting the district in many areas. State lawmakers approved a $617 million rescue plan last month to pay off $467 million in district debt and establish a new, debt-free Detroit Public Schools Community District.

Nicole Conaway and Steve Conn are accused in the lawsuit of encouraging sick-outs that closed dozens of schools earlier this year. The two teachers say they are protected by the First Amendment.
