Youth camp aims to boost trust between police, communities
DETROIT (AP) — About 100 students are attending a Detroit camp hosted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office that aims to improve relations between police and people in the communities they serve.
The Smart on Crime Detroit Youth Camp is being held this week as part of the U.S. Justice Department’s Smart on Crime program.Topics include perspectives of officers during traffic stops, media coverage of crime stories and understanding the consequences of choices.
U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade said that, “in light of recent tensions,” officials wanted “to provide a forum for teens and officers to share their perspectives and ideas for improving relations and trust.”
No relief for inmate who won major case over sentence
ADRIAN (AP) — The Michigan Court of Appeals has declined to release a prisoner who won a major case over a governor’s power to reduce sentences.
In a recent ruling, the court said the state parole board still controls the freedom of Matthew Makowski.
In 2010, Gov. Jennifer Granholm changed Makowski’s no-parole sentence, making him eligible for release, but she changed her decision a few days later.
The state Supreme Court said Granholm’s switch was illegal.
But Makowski remains behind bars. The parole board still hasn’t released him, although Makowski’s lawyers have noted that prisoners whose sentences have been commuted are routinely sent home.
Makowski was convicted of arranging a robbery that turned into the fatal stabbing of a co-worker in Dearborn in 1988.
Judge refuses to dismiss suit alleging gay marriage bias
HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) — A judge is allowing a lawsuit alleging a Roman Catholic school in New Jersey fired an employee because she’s married to a woman to move forward.
The Record reports a judge issued the ruling late Monday denying a request by Paramus Catholic High School to dismiss the lawsuit.
Attorneys for Kate Drumgoole say the school violated the state’s discrimination law when it fired her as dean of guidance and head coach of the basketball team after learning she was married to a woman.
But the school says Drumgoole was fired because she’s in a same-sex marriage, not because she’s gay. An attorney for the school says it’s within the law for churches to require employees to subscribe to their tenets.
Minor leaguer sends homer into own truck
SAUGET, Ill. (AP) — A minor league baseball player in southern Illinois hit a grand slam homerun only to find the ball smashed the windshield of his own truck.
The Gateway Grizzlies of Sauget, Illinois, say Brandon Thomas, 25, hit the homer during Sunday’s game against the Joliet Slammers. The outfielder sent the ball sailing into the parking lot, where his 2008 black Toyota Tundra was parked.
Thomas said he didn’t realize what happened until players in the dugout were laughing a couple of innings later and told him.
Thomas said after the game he “went out there and saw the damage that (he) had done.” The truck was parked 60 feet behind the left field wall.
Thomas said a couple of people have offered to fix the windshield for him.
