Specialty Treatment Court demonstrates success with graduation
Six non-violent offenders who successfully completed an intensive drug and alcohol probation program will graduate from the Specialty Treatment Court at 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. The Specialty Treatment Court has been a marked success with only a three percent recidivism rate according to the State Court Administrator’s Office, Chief Judge Julie Nicholson said.
“That means 97 percent of the participants that have successfully completed our program have stayed out of the criminal justice system which shows just how effective it is,” Nicholson said. “Judge (Nancy Tolwin) Carniak and I are very proud of our team as well as the graduates who have worked so hard to achieve and maintain sobriety.”
Feds: No charges in death of jail inmate in suburban Detroit
MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) — Federal prosecutors say there will be no criminal charges filed in the death of a suburban Detroit jail inmate.
In a brief statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office says the evidence doesn’t support a federal civil rights prosecution.
David Stojcevski died in the Macomb County jail in June 2014. His lawyer says the 32-year-old suffered serious withdrawals from drug use and died after serving 16 days of a 30-day sentence for careless driving. Video shows Stojcevski hallucinating in his cell and shaking with seizures.
Attorney Harold Perakis says the government’s decision to not pursue criminal charges will have no effect on the lawsuit.
