Mental competency exam ordered in 4 Michigan slayings
DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) — An ex-convict accused of killing his two children and two older stepchildren at his suburban Detroit home will undergo a mental competency evaluation.
The exam will put Gregory V. Green’s case on hold, likely for weeks. He appeared in a Dearborn Heights court Wednesday, two weeks after two kids died from carbon monoxide poisoning and two teens were fatally shot.
Police say Green killed the teen stepchildren in front of their mother, who is also his wife, and then called 911. He’s charged with first-degree murder, assault and torture. Green’s wife, Faith Green, survived, despite being attacked with a box cutter and shot.
Gregory Green was released from prison in 2008 after serving 16 years for killing his pregnant first wife. He had pleaded no contest to second-degree murder.
Michigan’s top court won’t give view on private school aid
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Supreme Court has rejected a request for an advisory opinion on sending public money to private schools.
In a very brief order Wednesday, the court says it’s not an “appropriate exercise” of the court’s powers.
The state budget that began on Oct. 1 includes up to $2.5 million to help private schools meet the cost of complying with state rules, such as employee background checks, immunizations and safety requirements.
Gov. Rick Snyder signed the budget into law in July but also asked the Supreme Court to evaluate whether giving money to private schools would violate the Michigan Constitution.
Public school advocates still can challenge the money with a lawsuit — and the issue could land again at Michigan's top court.
