Michigan Tribal State Federal Judicial Forum to Convene Oct. 10-11
The Michigan Tribal State Federal Judicial Forum will convene October 10-11 in Brimley to further its work in the area of Indian child welfare and domestic violence crimes.
“This Forum is so valuable in bringing our respective communities together to address shared issues of importance, such as child health and welfare,” said Justice Bridget M. McCormack, who serves as the Michigan Supreme Court liaison on tribal issues. “By working together, we gain a better understanding of different legal, cultural and historical perspectives on these issues, making us all better jurists.”
Created by Michigan Supreme Court Administrative Order 2014-12, the Forum will be meeting for the sixth time since adopting its charter in 2014 in Petoskey. The Forum will be hosted by the Bay Mills Indian Community, and will be co-chaired by the Hon. Timothy Connors, 22nd Circuit Court, and the Hon. Allie Greenleaf Maldonado, Chief Judge of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians.
At its upcoming meeting, the Forum will engage in strategic planning and goal setting with retired Utah Judge William Thorne, now a consultant with the Casey Family Programs Foundation, address current issues surrounding Indian child welfare, discuss the changing of tribal custody orders in state courts, hear an update on Pro Hac Vice proposed court rule change, and more.
The Forum consists of the chief tribal judges of each of Michigan’s 12 federally recognized tribes, or their designated alternate judges, and 10 state court judges, who are appointed by the Michigan Supreme Court.
Cass Tech alumni to host ‘Lawyers & Judges Centennial Celebration’
Cass Tech Alumni Association (CTAA) will host a “Lawyers & Judges Centennial Celebration” Thursday, Oct. 13.
The event will feature a panel discussion, “Cass Tech Student to Cass Tech Lawyer,” from 3-4:30 p.m. at Cass Technical High School, 2421 Second Ave, followed by a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m. at the Detroit Golf Club, 17911 Hamilton Road.
“Join us as we celebrate the tremendous contributions Cass Tech alumni have made to their respective communities in a variety of law-related positions,” said Lawrence C. Patrick Jr., CTAA chairman, of counsel to the law firm of Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer, and Weiss P.C., and a former Detroit Public Schools board member.
Reginald Turner, corporate litigator and member of the Clark Hill law firm, will moderate the panel discussion with several Cass Tech alumni: Lois Bingham, general counsel for Yazaki Corp.; Jeanine Brunson, deputy chief of the Violent and Organized Crime Unit of the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan; Howard Hertz, entertainment lawyer with the law firm of Hertz Schram PC; Conrad L. Mallett, Jr., former Michigan Supreme Court justice and currently the chief administrative officer of the Detroit Medical Center; Emory D. Moore, Jr., a labor and employment attorney at Clark Hill PLC; Sherman Sealey, managing member of the RSB Law firm; Regina Daniels Thomas, a deputy chief counsel at the public interest law firm, Legal Aid and Defender Association; and Suzanne Sinclair Smith, an adjudications officer with the International Operations Division of the Refugee, Asylum and International Operations Directorate within the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and the agency’s former field office director in Moscow and Amman, Jordan.
