U.S. District Court Judge Gerald Rosen (center) was the recipient recently of the Alvin Foon Humanitarian Award from the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation (MJSF). The awards ceremony took place late last month at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield as part of the 2016 Hall of Fame Induction event that evening. “The Alvin Foon Humanitarian Award was established to honor the memory of one of the MJSF founders and is presented to an individual or individuals for outstanding contributions to athletics and the community,” said Sari Cicurel of the MJSF.  Rosen, who served as chief judge of the U.S. District Court for seven years, was appointed to the federal bench in 1990. He served as the chief judicial mediator for the Detroit bankruptcy case, and was the architect of the “grand bargain,” which saved the Detroit Institute of Arts and preserved pensions for city retirees. The federal jurist is pictured with Shirley Foon Witt, wife of the late Alvin Foon, and Ron Foon, the son of the award’s namesake.
