The Michigan Indigent Defense Commission and the Macomb County Bar Association recently held a skills training session for criminal defense attorneys. Speakers included Marla McCowan (left), director of training, outreach and support for the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission, who is pictured with Detroit-area criminal defense attorney Cheryl Carpenter. The training event was designed as a model for compliance with the basic skills acquisition requirements of MICD Proposed Standard 1, organizers said, and was aimed at lawyers accepting appointments in adult criminal cases. Among the topics of discussion were initial interviews with clients, ethics and client-centeredness, preliminary exams and motion practive.
