The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Foundation awards grants each fall to organizations involved in issues pertinent to family law. This is the first time the national association selected Michigan organizations to be recipients. The top award is $5,000 and the organization must be a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit.
The Michigan Chapter of AAML has just over 40 Fellows. Michael Quinn, from Miller Johnson, serves as the state president, and Richard Roane, Warner Norcross, is a delegate to the Board of Governors. The state chapter of the AAML is dedicated to “Protecting the family … improving the practice.”
The Children’s Assessment Center opened its doors in 1993 and serves nearly 800 children a year. Children, who may have been sexually abused, will receive all of the services they need. The services are available on-site, and every family has access to any of the services they need, free of charge, every time. Children are referred for counseling through law enforcement or Children’s Protective Services. More information about the organization can be found at www.cac-kent.org.
The Legal Assistance Center (LAC) is an independent, nonprofit legal self-help center working to make access to justice for everyone a reality. Opened in 2002, the LAC was the first self-help center in Michigan and among the first in the country. It’s designed to address the challenges faced by those who represent themselves in the legal process. They help over 18,000 people each year with family, housing, consumer and other basic legal issues. More information about the organization can be found at www.LegalAssistanceCenter.org
The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Foundation was created in 1990 by fellows of the AAML. The Foundation is comprised of fellows of the AAML and others committed to improving the practice of matrimonial and family law and promoting and protecting the family. The Foundation operates under its own leadership with an independent board of directors and elects its own officers. It has been designated a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.
Founded in 1962, the mission of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers is to provide leadership that promotes the highest degree of professionalism and excellence in the practice of family law. Comprised of the top 1,600 matrimonial attorneys throughout the nation, members are recognized experts in the specialized areas of matrimonial law, including divorce, prenuptial agreements, legal separation, annulment, custody, property valuation and division, support, and the rights of unmarried couples.
