State Bar of Michigan groups to host juvenile adjudication educational event

The State Bar of Michigan Criminal Issues Initiative and Equal Access Initiative, in collaboration with the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, will present an educational opportunity, “What Do You Mean I Can’t Do That? The Consequences of a Juvenile Adjudication,” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 25 at Lake Michigan College, located at 2755 E. Napier Ave. in Benton Harbor.

The program will contain a panel discussion moderated by Berrien County Probate Court Judge Mabel Johnson Mayfield that will explore the school to prison pipeline, long-term impacts of juvenile pleas and adjudications, alternatives to formal court involvement, what collateral consequences are and why they are important and ideas for systemic change. Those in attendance will also have an opportunity to take part in an interactive question and answer session and receive access to valuable community resources.

The event is free to attend, but space is limited so registration is required. Register for the event. For more information, contact Michelle Erskine at merskine@mail.michbar.org or Carrie Sharlow at csharlow@mail.michbar.org.
