Varnum attorney O’Brien named to board of directors for Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan
Varnum attorney Maureen E. O’Brien has been named to the Board of Directors for Down Syndrome Association West Michigan (DSAWM).
O’Brien is an associate attorney based in the firm’s Grand Rapids office. Under Varnum’s free agent program for new associates, O’Brien works on a variety of legal matters including employment, labor and commercial litigation matters. She has also authored client advisories on various topics. Prior to joining Varnum in 2015, she served as a judicial intern for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Pittsburgh.
Based on her blog entry, O’Brien was a featured commentator in the article on municipal prayer in the March 10, 2017 issue of Grand Rapids Legal News.
The mission of DSAWM is to provide resources and advocacy for individuals with Down syndrome and their families, and to provide public awareness and information about Down syndrome. O’Brien, who has a family member with an intellectual disability, said she has an appreciation for organizations dedicated to those with developmental and physical impairments.
“When I moved to Grand Rapids, I knew that I wanted to become involved in a similar organization,” she said. “It is important to me to create public awareness of and empower those who are in a similar situation and I know I can fulfill those goals with DSAWM.”
The Down Syndrome Association of West Michigan serves families in 12 counties and is also a resource for medical professionals, educators, therapists, disability organizations and other community partners.
