Judge Connors will present at World Peacemaking Conference

Washtenaw County Judge Timothy Connors and Belinda Dulin from the Dispute Resolution Center in Ann Arbor will lead a breakout session at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 1, as part of the Rotary World Peacemaking Conference, March 31-April 1 at the Michigan League in Ann Arbor. The conference is open to the public.

The breakout session is titled, “Native American Peacemaking and Restorative Justice: Auras of Hope for State Court Justice Systems.”

“We believe this story can assist peaceful resolution of conflict in communities outside of ours,” Connors said in an email. “It is further our belief that institutions such as courts, as part of our responsibility, should look first to heal relationships through respectful dialogue that should have at its center the desire to understand, even if we ultimately disagree. Only then can the ripple effects of our actions, and the subsequent reactions of those affected by our actions, be addressed.

“We should always be mindful of our potential, inadvertently or otherwise, to exacerbate the existing harm inherent in all conflict when it arrives upon our doorsteps. In so doing, we have fulfilled the purpose with which we have been entrusted and our youth, our families and our communities all benefit.”

Connors has been a State Court Judge since 1991. He has served by appointment for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians and co-chairs the Michigan Tribal-State-Federal Forum. He serves on the Advisory Committee for the Native American Rights Fund Indigenous Peacemaking Initiative. He is the Presiding Judge of the Washtenaw County Peacemaking Court, and teaches at the University of Michigan Law School and Wayne State Law School.

Dulin has developed school-based programs that serve students and families. The DRC partners with the Peacemaking Court.
