Warner Norcross partner elected chair of IBA’s Section of Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law



Eugene E. Smary, a partner with Warner Norcross & Judd LLP, has been elected to a two-year term as chair of the International Bar Association's Section of Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law.

The section is the IBA’s home for members who practice in the areas of environmental, health and safety law; international construction law; mining law oil and gas law; power law and water law. The section’s leadership and thousands of members are from every corner of the world and bring robust, diverse points of view to the table. The section also includes an Academic Advisory group of leading academics from law schools around the world. Smary’s term runs through December 2018.

Smary has previously served as chair of the American Bar Association’s Section of Environment, Energy and Resources, as well as of the State Bar of Michigan and Grand Rapids Bar Association Environmental Law sections.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Environmental Lawyers and writes and lectures internationally on many environmental and natural resources subjects. He has also taught environmental law as an associate professor of at Univer-sity of Notre Dame Law School.

Smary has been recognized nationally and internationally for his accomplishments in environmental and natural resources law. He has been recognized as one of The Best Lawyers in America since 1991 and is consistently included in Euromoney's Leading Environ-mental Lawyers in the World and The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers lists. Best Lawyers named him the 2012 Grand Rapids Environmental Lawyer of the Year.

His practice focuses on cross-border environmental, resource and infrastructure issues, hard-rock mining, site remediation and environmental due diligence. His clients include national and local governments as well as a broad range of domestic and international corporations.
