Supreme Court ties in inheritance dispute; stepsons lose to sisters
ALLEGAN, Mich. (AP) — After hearing arguments, the Michigan Supreme Court won't intervene in a dispute over an inheritance in Allegan County.
The vote was 3-3 Monday with Justice Richard Bernstein not participating. The tie means an appeals court decision will stand.
John Cliffman didn't have a will in 2012 when he died in a car accident. His two sisters have been declared the beneficiaries of a $160,000 settlement with an insurance company.
Cliffman's stepsons challenged the award, noting that their mother was married to Cliffman until she died in 1996. They said Cliffman raised them as his own sons.
Three Supreme Court justices said the stepsons were entitled to a share, but the tie means the sisters win.
Wayne Law’s The Journal of Law in Society elects new board
Ten law students have been elected to the 2017-18 Executive Board of The Journal of Law in Society at Wayne State University Law School.
They are Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Demers of Detroit; Managing Editor Albert Asciutto of Waterford; Reviewing Editor Madeline Sinkovich of Novi; Symposium Director Casey Thal of Detroit; Senior Note Editors Dana Fraser of Westland, Shareece McCauley of Westland and Jessica Soblesky of Canton; Executive Article Editors Laura Biery of Grosse Pointe Farms, Nicklas Candea of Detroit and Linda Girard of Detroit.
Acting as the scholarly voice of the law school’s Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights, The Journal of Law in Society provides discourse on the junctions of law and society. Each year, the Journal identifies a range of issues affecting Detroit and other parts of the world and then publishes articles that address those issues within their social context. The Journal publishes twice a year and hosts an academic symposium on topics relevant to the larger Detroit area. This fall, it will host its symposium and publish a themed issue acknowledging 50 years since the 1967 Detroit Race Rebellion.
The Journal is managed and edited by Wayne Law students with support from faculty advisor Peter J. Hammer, professor of law and director of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights.
2nd Annual Jesuit Day of Service to take place April 22 in Detroit
Join Detroit Mercy Law students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 22 at Ss. Peter & Paul Jesuit Church, 629 E. Jefferson Ave. in Detroit for the 2nd Annual Jesuit Day of Service. Working together to make a difference in the community is part of a national initiative for Jesuit schools. The day of service will benefit Ss. Peter & Paul Jesuit Church and its Pope Francis Warming Center.
