Grand Rapids ranked fifth best city in the United States to start a business
The personal-finance website WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2017’s best large cities to start a business, and Grand Rapids came in fifth.
In order to help aspiring entrepreneurs maximize their chances for prosperity, WalletHub’s analysts compared the 150 most populated U.S. cities across 18 key indicators of startup viability. The data range from five-year business survival rate to office-space affordability.
The number one ranked is Oklahoma City, with Springfield, Missouri, Salt Lake City and Charlotte?(N.C.) and Tulsa ranked in order above Grand Rapids.

Laura A. Jeltema joins Warner Norcross
Laura A. Jeltema has joined the law firm of Warner Norcross & Judd LLP as senior counsel.
Jeltema a concentrates her practice in trusts and estates law and family office law. She works closely with high-net-worth individuals and families on sophisticated estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer tax planning. Jeltema also manages the preparation of complex wills and estate planning documents and partners with clients to develop strategies for wealth preservation, charitable giving and business succession.
She will be based in the Grand Rapids office.
Prior to joining Warner Norcross, Jeltema was a partner at Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP in Washington, D.C. During her 11-year tenure with the firm she was involved in leadership roles focused on mentoring and the integration of new associates.
Jeltema holds a bachelor of arts in comparative politics from Western Michigan University, graduating summa cum laude. She also holds a doctor of jurisprudence from American University, Washington College of Law, where she graduated magna cum laude and was Order of the Coif. After graduation, she spent nearly a year on a Fulbright teaching English in Vienna.
Jeltema writes regularly on trusts and estate planning topics.
A native of Grand Rapids, she resides in Forest Hills with her husband Jeff, and their twins.
