DBA and 3rd Circuit Court to host new attorney mass swearing in ceremony

The Third Judicial Circuit Court of Michigan joins with the Detroit Bar Association to host the new attorney mass swearing in ceremony. Chief Judge Colombo will preside over the Admission Ceremony. Detroit Bar President Donn Fresard will extend an invitation to the newly admitted attorneys to join the Detroit Bar.

New lawyers will take the oath of the profession. The admission ceremony marks the beginning of individuals beginning the practice of law and is celebrated with friends and family as the venerated lawyers and judges welcome the new lawyers into the profession.

New attorneys are admitted twice per year.

Prior to the ceremony, new attorneys must register with the Wayne County Clerk’s Office. To register, attorneys should take the original letter they received from the Board of Law Examiners, along with a $25 filing fee (cash or money order) to Room 201 of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. Registration must be done in person and must be completed prior to the Admission Ceremony. If attorneys plan to register immediately prior to the ceremony, they should arrive by 10 a.m. at the latest. When entering the building, attorneys will be required to go through a metal detector and possible search. Permitted items and nearby parking lots are listed on the Third Circuit Court website, www.3rdcc.org under the General Information tab.

Following the Admission Ceremony, attorneys’ Order of Admission will be processed and submitted to the State Bar of Michigan on their behalf.

Date and time: Wednesday, May 24, 2017 (4th Wednesday in May). Arrive no later than 10 a.m. Auditorium opens at 11:30.  The chief judge will begin the actual swearing in at 12:30 p.m. and all attendees should be seated.
Location: Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, 13th Floor Auditorium, 2 Woodward Ave.

Guests are welcome to attend the Admission Ceremony. There is no need for guests to register in advance or check in at the ceremony. Guests may bring cameras, but should be prepared to tell the security screeners that they are attending the Mass Admission Ceremony for new attorneys.

Newly admitted attorneys to the Bar are eligible for a one-year free Detroit Bar Association membership.

Corrupt public workers to lose retirement  benefit under bill

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan lawmakers have voted to require that public employees convicted of a crime related to their work lose a portion of their pension or 401(k).

State law allows for forfeiture of public employees’ retirement benefits if they misuse funds or take bribes. Legislation approved 35-2 by the Senate Thursday would mandate such forfeitures and apply them to a convicted worker’s 401(k) — not just a pension.

They would lose the portion of a benefit contributed by the employer, including earnings on those contributions.

The bill previously cleared the House and is expected to soon move to Gov. Rick Snyder.

The sponsor, Republican Rep. Jim Runestad of White Lake, says seizing retirement benefits should be mandatory when a government worker violates the public trust.
