Gov. Rick Snyder ordered U.S. and Michigan flags to be lowered to half-staff on all state buildings and within the state Capitol complex Tuesday, May 16, in honor of Norton Shores Police Officer Jonathan Ginka, who died Wednesday, May 10.
“Jonathan was a dedicated police officer and will be deeply missed. I send my most heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this time,” Snyder said.
Ginka was a 10-year veteran officer with the Norton Shores Police Department and a member of the F.O.P. Charles D. Hammond Lodge 99. He graduated from North Muskegon High School and achieved a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Grand Valley State University.
A service in his honor was held Tuesday, May 16, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in North Muskegon, attended by hundreds of police officers from around the state. Hundreds more lined the streets for the processional.
This flag order is in accordance with Executive Order 2013-10. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.
When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
