SBM Labor and Employment Section has lively schedule of events coming up

The State Bar of Michigan Labor and Employment Law Section will sponsor “Representing Clients in Mediation” at Grand Valley State University’s Eberhard Center, 301 Fulton St. West, Grand Rapids, on June 6 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by the ADR, Litigation, Probate and Estate Planning, Real Property Law, and Young Lawyers sections.

The morning starts with “How Mediation Advocacy Is Different from Traditional Zealous Advocacy: How to Make the Most of a Unique Process” with Frederick D. Dilley, Foster Swift, filling the role of Mediator and Anne L. Buckleitner, Smietanka Buckleitner Steffes & Gezon as Advocate. That is followed by a session on “Preparing Lawyers and Clients for Mediation,” with Mediator  Lee Hornberger, Arbitrator and Mediator, Traverse City and Advocate: Scott S. Brinkmeyer, Mika Meyers.

Just before noon, the final session, “Mediation Advocacy at the Table: How to Achieve the Best Results Possible for Your Client,” will be presented by Mediator William W. Jack, Smith Haughey Rice and Roegge, and Advocate Pamela C. Enslen, Warner Norcross and Judd (Kalamazoo office).

In addition, the section is holding a seminar on "Inside Perspectives from In-House Counsel" followed by networking, from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, at The Reserve at Big Rock Chop House, located at 245 South Eton Street in Birmingham.  

The seminar will consist of three 40-minute-long roundtable discussions that will allow participants to engage with prominent in-house counsel in a discussion about the various considerations involved in the decision-making process for an employment case. Featured speakers will include in-house counsel from several different industries, including automotive, banking, education, food services, gaming, health care, municipal government, utility services and more. Registration for the event will begin at 3:30, the seminar will occur from 4-6 p.m. and networking with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will take place from 6-8 p.m.

The event costs $50 for those who register by June 5, and $60 for those who register at the door (on-site registrants must pay via check or cash only).
