Leah Warren, a 2017 graduate of Birmingham Public Schools, helped create Patriot Week with her father, Judge Michael Warren, in 2009.
On Monday, Sept. 11, students, staff and the community of Birmingham Public Schools will commemorate 9/11 with a ceremony and political leader forum. At least four Michigan gubernatorial candidates – two Democrats and two Republicans – will participate in the forum, which is open to the public.
Seaholm High School students and the general public are invited to a ceremony at 8 a.m. outside of the school at the flagpole, weather permitting. The ceremony will be followed by the political leader forum in the Seaholm Auditorium. Seaholm students have worked with the Patriot Week organizers to present this event to the public.
“This will be an excellent opportunity for students and the public to learn about our current and future political leaders and give solemn tribute to 9/11,” said Oakland Circuit Judge Michael Warren, the moderator of the forum. "At the forum, we discuss what unites us as Americans, and how what unites us informs policy-making. This dialogue will focus on the underlying foundations and history of the country, and how they can help guide us to a better future. It will delve into the principles and historical context of current issues and policy disputes. This is intended to be a very unique – and desperately needed dialogue."
Each participant will have an opening statement and will be asked questions by students and the public. Time limits will be established for responses. Panelists include:
• Bill Cobbs, Democrat. Former Global Vice President for Xerox, police officer, and Navy veteran. ?
• Michigan State Senator Patrick Colbeck, Republican. Former aerospace engineer, manager, and ?business owner. ?
• Dr. Jim Hines, Republican. Obstetrician, missionary doctor, hospital and medical association CEO, ?and owner of medical practice. ?
• Shri Thanedar, Democrat. Chemist, business owner, and entrepreneur. ?
The event will kick off Patriot Week, which serves to renew America’s spirit by celebrating the first principles, Founding Fathers and other patriots, vital documents, speeches and flags that enrich our country. Patriot Week is anchored by the key dates of the commemoration of the September 11 terrorist attacks and the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17 (Constitution Day). Patriot Week develops themes and programming for each day during the week.
Patriot Week was co-created in 2009 by Judge Warren and his then 10-year-old daughter (Birmingham Public Schools graduate) Leah. It has captured the imagination and support of citizens across the nation.
