ABA Legal Fact Check examines limits on presidential executive orders
The American Bar Association updated its new web-based ABA Legal Fact Check today by exploring the limits on presidential executive orders.
On Oct. 10, the U.S. Supreme Court will consider the constitutionality of President Donald Trump’s revised Executive Order No. 13780 known as the travel ban. ABA Legal Fact Check looks at the history of these orders, and how they largely went unchecked by the courts until 1952 after President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 10340, which placed all U.S. steel mills under federal control during the Korean War. Later that year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer that President Truman had overstepped his authority because he attempted to make law rather than clarify an existing piece of legislation. In that decision, Justice Robert Jackson, in a concurring opinion, put forth a three-part test to judge the possible overreach of presidential power that is still relied upon by courts today.
ABA Legal Fact Check, debuted last month and is the first fact check website focusing exclusively on legal matters. The project is one of several initiatives launched by Hilarie Bass, who became ABA president on Aug. 15 at the close of the ABA Annual Meeting in New York.
ABA Legal Fact Check seeks to help the public find dependable answers and explanations to swirling and sometimes confusing legal questions. The URL for the new site is www.abalegalfactcheck.com. Follow us on twitter @ABAFactCheck.
Goodman Acker named ‘Cool Place’ to work
Goodman Acker, P.C. has been chosen for the second year in a row as one of the ‘2017 Cool Places to Work’ in Michigan by Crain’s Detroit Business and Best Companies Group.
Crain’s Detroit Business designed this program to recognize the top 100 companies in Michigan that go the extra mile to make sure their employees feel appreciated.
This is the 5th year Crain’s has recognized the state’s coolest places to work. Companies throughout the state with at least 15 employees entered the two-part survey process. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company’s workplace benefits and policies. Next, the employees completed a confidential 80 question survey about workplace culture, company leadership, as well as, other aspects of work.
This award is unique because 75 percent of the final ranking is based on whether employees understand the long-term strategy of the company and whether they feel they are being groomed for leadership positions in the future, among other criteria.
Goodman Acker, P.C. stands out and above many other companies in Michigan based on their employee recognition, wellness perks, and charities they support. Goodman Acker, P.C. ranked 26 out of 100 companies. Only three law firms were selected, and Goodman Acker, P.C. was the highest ranked.
Among many other things, Goodman Acker, P.C. offers its employees weekly organic fruit deliveries, frequent free lunches and quarterly back/neck massages.
Senior Partner Gerald Acker recently said “In our world ‘cool’ means that we work incredibly hard for the clients who hire us. It’s ‘cool’ to make a difference in peoples lives.”
“We are who we are because we have the coolest employees on the planet working with us,” said Senior Partner Barry Goodman.
