The South Central Michigan Chapter of Advocates and Leaders for Police and Community Trust (ALPACT) hosted a free showing on Nov. 13 of the film “Waking in Oak Creek” at the Michigan Theatre. The film tells of the thousands of Wisconsin residents who stood up for their neighbors in the face of hate after the August 5, 2012 shooting in a Sikh temple in Oak Creek. It was followed by a community discussion moderated by Steve Spreitzer from the Michigan Roundtable for Diversity & Inclusion, with representatives from the FBI, Michigan Department of Civil Rights, Jackson County Prosecutor's Office, local law enforcement, and the Sikh community. The Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR), a founding member of ALPACT facilitates chapters in Detroit, Jackson, Saginaw, Flint, Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Lansing, Benton Harbor and Holland, and an affiliate chapter in Kalamazoo.
