Cop’s conviction stands in bloody beating case
INKSTER (AP) — The Michigan Court of Appeals has affirmed the conviction of a Detroit-area police officer whose bloody beating of a motorist was recorded on dash-cam video and led to a $1.4 million settlement.
The decision came months after William Melendez was released from prison. He served 14 months in jail and prison before he was released by the parole board.
In 2015, Melendez pulled Floyd Dent from his car in Inkster and punched him in the head 16 times. Dent suffered broken ribs, blood on the brain and other injuries. Melendez was convicted of assault.
Much of his appeal centered on statements by the prosecutor or witnesses during trial. The appeals court said it was improper for jurors to hear that Melendez declined to speak to investigators. But the court calls it a harmless error.

GOP congressman ratchets up pressure to fix DACA
MIAMI (AP) — A Republican congressman from Florida says he won't support a year-end spending measure unless Congress passes a solution for immigrants brought into the country illegally as children.
Rep. Carlos Curbelo joined many Democratic lawmakers in that stance Tuesday, even though he has been denied a seat by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. The caucus membership is entirely Democratic.
Some other Republicans have pressed Speaker Paul Ryan to act quickly on immigration legislation to protect 800,000 young immigrants. Curbelo's willingness to withhold needed support for the spending measure goes further than others in his party.
President Donald Trump gave Congress until March to find a solution after he rescinded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, but some lawmakers say the measure can't be postponed. These immigrants begin facing deportation in March.

Alleged car burglar calls 911 when truck owner confronts him
MAYER, Ariz. (AP) — A man accused of burglarizing a disabled pickup truck in north-central Arizona later called 911 to report being threatened by the vehicle's owner.
Yavapai County Sheriff's officials say 25-year-old Robert Jones of Glendale was booked into the Camp Verde jail on suspicion of burglary and criminal damage.
The Daily Courier reports Jones allegedly broke out the window of the truck and took items out of the vehicle.
Sheriff's deputies contact the owner, who says his truck was left on the side of Highway 69 because it had a flat tire.
When the man returned with a spare tire, he saw the broken window and confronted Jones. Authorities say Jones denied involvement in the theft although the victim saw his duffel bag and tire iron in the suspect's car.
