Judge dismisses 1 charge in female genital mutilation case
DETROIT (AP) — A federal judge in Detroit has dismissed one charge against two doctors in connection with a female genital mutilation case.
U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman ruled Sunday that Dr. Jumana Nagarwala and Dr. Fakhruddin Attar didn’t commit conspiracy to transport a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.
Friedman wrote that prosecutors haven’t contended that any "libidinal gratification" was "sought or obtained" from subjecting the girls to genital mutilation. Both doctors still face other charges.
The government is accusing Nagarwala of conducting the procedure on girls at Attar’s clinic with his approval in Livonia, just west of Detroit.
Nagarwala denies any crime and says she performed a religious custom on girls from her Muslim sect, the India-based Dawoodi Bohra.
Two Minnesota mothers also have been charged after taking their daughters to the clinic.
Mother charged in infant’s death convicted in 2010 drowning
PETOSKEY, Mich. (AP) — A northern Michigan woman facing charges in the 2016 death of her infant daughter was convicted nearly seven years ago after her daughter died while taking a bath with her in Oklahoma.
The Petoskey News-Review reports the Lisa Rae Bryan’s first child was less than 2 months old when she died in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 2010. Bryan was convicted of second-degree manslaughter the following year.
Bryan now faces a Jan. 31 preliminary hearing in Michigan on second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter and other charges in Emmet County in connection with the 2016 death.
The newspaper reported last week that police said the 32-year-old Bryan told investigators she’d tried to feed her daughter and awoke to find the infant’s face "smashed against her breast." The child was less than a month old.
