Varnum attorneys  named to community positions



Varnum attorney Luis Avila has been named to the Board of Directors of the Grand Rapids Art Museum; Varnum’s Yvonne Kupfermann has been named to the Education and Programming Committee of the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan.

Avila is a partner in the Labor and Employment group, focusing his practice on labor, employment and immigration issues. Avila is also the current Chair of the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and serves on the boards of Grand Rapids Ballet, Wedgwood Christian Services and Grand Rapids Symphony.

The Grand Rapids Art Museum has in its collection over 5,000 works of art, ranging from Renaissance to Modern Art. Focusing on art, design and creativity, GRAM provides diverse platforms for experiences, ideas, and dialogue that enrich the human spirit and build learning.

Avila’s numerous recognitions include selection for the past two years as a “Rising Star” by Michigan Super Lawyers, and being named to the Lawyers of Color Hot List in 2014. He was recently a Grand Rapids Business Journal “40 Under Forty Business Leader” for the third time, and is a member of the current class of Leadership Grand Rapids.

Kupfermann is a labor and employment attorney who focuses on employment and family-based immigration matters. She works on visa processing, waivers, DACA, and citizenship matters.

Kupfermann is a psychology and political science graduate of the University of Michigan, where she worked in a research lab that allowed her to attend and present at many national and regional conferences regarding mental health. She received her law degree from the University of Notre Dame.

The Mental Health Foundation provides mental health awareness and education through programs and resource for schools, communities, and businesses. The Education and Programming Committee develops curricula for foundation programs such as the “Be Nice” campaign, an anti-bullying, suicide prevention initiative.
