Judge Matthew P. Sabaugh with 37th District Court in Warren was recently named president of the Macomb County District Court Judges Association for 2018.
“I’m very honored and happy to serve the association. I look forward to working with my colleagues to address the concerns of district courts across Macomb County,” said Sabaugh, who was voted into the post earlier this month during a judges’ meeting.
He replaces Judge Douglas Shepherd of the 41A District Court in Shelby Township.
Sabaugh said he hoped to continue to work with other judges and entities to help the district courts adopt new technologies and standards.
“One of our highest priorities will be implementing the new Michigan Indigent Defense Commission (MIDC) Standards,” he said. “The association gives
us all an opportunity to share our knowledge and experience with our fellow judges.”
The association consists of the 19 district court judges in the county.
The Macomb County District Judges Association meets two or three times each year to discuss any relevant legal issue or administrative matter, such as new orders from the state Supreme Court.
Sabaugh will run the meetings and also serves as the association’s liaison with other entities.
“Our association gives us a collective voice as district judges so that we can speak up on matters that concern the courts,” said Sabaugh.
The association president typically serves for one year.
Sabaugh was appointed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm in 2008 and was re-elected by the voters for a six-year term ending January 1, 2019. The 37th district covers the Warren and Center Line area.
Prior to his appointment, Sabaugh served eight years as a Macomb County assistant prosecuting attorney.
