In Memoriam: Lloyd Powell

Lloyd E. Powell, who served as the Washtenaw County Chief Public Defender for 37 years, died Feb. 23 in Ann Arbor at the age of 90.

A native of Cuthbert, Georgia, Powell earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Law Enforcement and Security from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, and a Juris Doctor and Masters of Business Administration (Management) degrees from Wayne State University’s Law School and Graduate School of Business.

Powell’s military career in law enforcement included many years of service in Europe and Asia, ending with a position as Chief of Investigations for the Office of Provost Marshall at U.S. Army Headquarters in Seoul, Korea.

Powell, who was a long time member and supporter of the Washtenaw County Bar Association, then practiced law in Michigan for over 43 years. He served as a trial attorney for the prosecution and public defense as well as a criminal defense trial attorney in private practice.

He held the appointed Office of Public Defender for Washtenaw County since January 1980.

Powell was honored with many awards over more than five decades of public service within the criminal justice system and in a career almost evenly divided between law enforcement/prosecution and criminal defense.

Donations can be made in his honor to charitable organizations that aid veterans or promote international friendship.

The family will conduct a private graveside service; and a public memorial celebration is being planned.
