On March 9, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette and the Michigan State Police announced charges against Monroe County 1st District Judge Jarod Calkins. Calkins has been charged with one count of transporting a person for the purpose of prostitution and four counts of hiring women for the purpose of prostitution.
Transporting a person for the purpose of prostitution is a felony that carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison. Hiring women for the purpose of prostitution is a misdemeanor with a penalty of up to 93 days in jail.
“Public officials must be held to a higher standard, and I will continue to work with law enforcement to ensure that we hold accountable anyone who violates the public trust,” said Schuette. “I applaud the work done by the Michigan State Police and my Public Integrity Unit who put a stop to activities that violate the public trust.”
Calkins, 41 of Carleton, was arraigned Friday, March 9, 2018 before Judge Bronson in the 1st District Court. Bond was set at $25,000 personal recognizance.
Following arraignment the 1st District Court disqualified themselves from further proceedings in this case. The next court date for Calkins has not been determined.
CASE BACKGROUND
Michigan State Police received reports of prostitution-related activities at a hotel in Monroe Township and opened an investigation to determine if the reports were accurate.
Upon investigating, the MSP First District Special Investigation Section uncovered evidence that an individual matching the description of Calkins was allegedly having women meet him at the hotel to engage in sexual activity for money.
THE?PUBLIC INTEGRITY UNIT
In January 2011, Attorney General Schuette created a new Public Integrity Unit (PIU) to strengthen the fight against corruption in state and local government, protect taxpayer dollars and restore the public’s trust in government
A criminal charge is merely an accusation and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
