Judge Giovan gives commencement address to dental school
Retired Wayne County Circuit Judge William J. Giovan gave the commencement address to the 2018 graduating class of the University of Detroit Mercy Dental School May 12.
Giovan's father, Dr. William J. Giovan, Sr., was a member of first graduating class of the dental school in 1935. Giovan has established a scholarship in his honor at the dental school, the Dr. William J. Giovan Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Currently, Giovan acts as a mediator and arbitrator in civil court disputes, as well as serving as a visiting judge from time to time in various courts.
Court’s Public Service Committee launched first mission May 12
The 36th District Court’s newly minted Public Service Committee, the 36th District Crew, kicked off its first mission in the community by participating in the Motor City Makeover on Saturday, May 12. The annual citywide volunteer cleanup and beautification initiative sent court employees into the surrounding neighborhood where they put their new motto into action: “Proudly Serving Others.” Several court employees worked hard to clear a residential area of debris and garbage. The 36th District Crew is looking forward to getting out, meeting its neighbors, and making a difference in the community that it serves.
Honigman hosts ‘Opportunity Detroit’ event May 5
Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP hosted the Real Estate Executive Council’s (REEC) “Opportunity Detroit: How to Connect, Invest & Develop In & Around Detroit” event in its Detroit headquarters on May 5. This event was the final session of REEC’s 2018 Spring Meeting.
The “Opportunity Detroit: How to Connect, Invest & Develop In & Around Detroit” event was a “pitch” session highlighting active development projects in Detroit as well as local RFP opportunities. The event also featured presentations by local minority developers and officials from the City of Detroit, Wayne County and City of Flint, Michigan.
“Honigman is proud to host this Real Estate Executive Council event,” said Denise Lewis, leader of Honigman’s Urban Redevelopment practice group, and REEC’s 2018 Spring Meeting conference chair. “Hosting this event is just the latest example of our firm’s dedication to the reemergence and strengthening of Detroit.”
The Real Estate Executive Council is the leading national organization of executives of color in the real estate field. Its membership includes senior executives focusing on investment, management, leasing, financing and property development.
