Several WMU-Cooley students gave up some of their weekend time recently to help out with a picnic in the park put on by Cardboard Prophets, a local organization that helps the homeless. Students helped set up the event, served meals, visited with people and helped clean up.
WMU-Cooley student LeMontr’e Taylor, who is a class director with the campus Student Bar Association, said they also distributed clothing that had been donated as part of an ongoing effort at the school to help.
“During my first term of law school, I saw a post for the organization and decided to donate clothes to the organization in the park,” Taylor said. “I then became the SBA class director for my class, and it was my goal to bring awareness to the homeless issue in Lansing.”
Taylor said he sees it as his duty to ensure that WMU-Cooley students and Cardboard Prophets continue to grow a strong relationship. Toward that end, Taylor and other students help the organization with events, community service activities, and the clothing drive. Food drives have also taken place, and recently Taylor brought in Cardboard Prophets founder Mike Karl to speak to students, faculty and staff.
