WSU?hosts debate on globalization and the American worker June 13


Wayne State University and the World Affairs Council of Detroit will host a debate on globalization and the American worker, Wednesday, June 13, 5:30 p.m. (reception), 6:30 p.m. (program), at Wayne State’s General Lectures, Room 150, 5045 Anthony Wayne Dr., Detroit. This national livestreamed event, convened by the Brookings Institution’s Foreign Policy program and the Charles Koch Institute in partnership with POLITICO, is the sixth in a series of thematic debates on America’s role in the world.

The series seeks to foster a constructive national discussion on the future of American foreign policy. The Detroit debate will address how the United States has approached free trade since the Cold War, the impact of globalization on U.S. workers and the future of the American economy in an interconnected world.

Doug Palmer, senior trade reporter at POLITICO, will moderate the debate, which will include:

• William A. Galston, Ezra K. Zilkha chair and senior fellow, Governance Studies program, Brookings Institution

• Daniel J. Ikenson, director, Herbert A. Stiefel Center for Trade Policy Studies, Cato Institute

• Mark Muro, senior fellow and policy director, Metropolitan Policy Program, Brookings Institution

• Christine McDaniel, senior research fellow, Mercatus Center, George Mason University

 Dustin Walsh, senior reporter at Crain's Detroit Business, will field questions from the in-person audience and on Twitter using the hashtag #AmericaInTheWorld.

 

Miller Canfield to offer free legal help to entrepreneurs June 18-22
 

Miller Canfield attorneys will offer free legal help to new and aspiring business owners during Detroit Startup Week, June 18-22.

Miller Canfield and other prominent Detroit law firms and legal departments will host the fourth annual Small Business Legal Academy (SBLA), just one of the many offerings during Startup week, presenting free legal panels on key topics that startups need to know, including intellectual property, employment, tax, funding and real property issues.

The one-hour panels will take place June 18, 1-2 p.m. at Bamboo, 1420 Washington Blvd., and June 19, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., at 20 Witherell St. (ground floor of the Madison Building near Grand Circus Park).

Additionally, Startup Week will host two free legal office hours sessions, where entrepreneurs can meet individually for up to an hour with teams of experienced lawyers from Detroit area firms and companies to discuss their specific legal needs. The office hours are co-sponsored by nonprofit TechTown and will take place June 20, 1-4 p.m. and June 21, 9 a.m.-noon, in the Cadillac Café.  Advance registration is encouraged.
