A new agreement between Oakland University and University of Detroit Mercy School of Law will allow students to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a law degree in just six years.
“This agreement gives our students who intend to attend law school another option to complete their degrees in a seamless way,” said Kevin J. Corcoran, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Oakland University.
Under the terms of the “3+3” agreement, OU students can shave a year off the traditional timeline and save thousands of dollars in tuition costs.
“Our colleagues at University of Detroit Mercy recognized the talent and work ethic of our students who have attended Law School there,” Corcoran said. “This agreement is a win for them, as well as for our students.”
To apply, Oakland University students must have completed a minimum of 75 credits in an approved undergraduate degree program at OU and have a cumulative grade point undergraduate GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale as of the date of their application.
Students must also take the Law School Admission Test and meet all other Detroit Mercy Law admissions requirements. During their fourth (senior) year at Oakland, students will attend University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and will begin with the first two semesters of credits at Detroit Mercy Law (30 credits) transferring back to Oakland for completion of the bachelor’s degree.
“Our new partnership with Oakland University is an excellent opportunity for students,” said Detroit Mercy Law Dean Phyllis L. Crocker. “We are pleased to offer an accelerated career path for aspiring lawyers by allowing students to complete their
bachelor’s and J.D. in just six years. OU will be sending us highly qualified, motivated students with a passion for law, and we are certain they will add immense value to the Detroit Mercy Law community.”
According to the agreement, the admission deadline for the program will be Feb. 1 and the decision date will be March 1 for Detroit Mercy Law’s fall term.
