Deadline to register for August primary is next Monday
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The deadline to register to vote in the Aug. 7 primary election is just days away.
Secretary of State Ruth Johnson says the deadline is Monday, July 9. She says every community will have a primary election on Aug. 7.
Voters must be 18 years old by the election date. They can register by mail or in person at their local clerk’s office or at a secretary of state office. A registered voter who needs to change an address can go to www.ExpressSOS.com .
The primary election ballot will include races for governor and U.S. Senate.
Detroit development to bring new housing near downtown
DETROIT (AP) — A developer plans to bring 374 lofts, townhouses, flats and high-rise units to Detroit’s Lafayette Park neighborhood.
The city says the Lafayette West development will include rentals, owner-occupied units and parking. At least 20 percent of the rental units will be set aside as affordable housing.
Ginosko Development is expected to invest $108 million in Lafayette West, just east of downtown. The project will include 114 luxury rental units, 200 rental lofts and 60 townhouses, carriage houses and stacked flats.
Each unit is designed to be within walking or biking distance to downtown, major employment, recreational areas and neighborhood shopping.
Ginosko expects to break ground early next year.

The 16th annual Mark Weiss and M. Jon Posner Day at Comerica Park will be celebrated from 5:30-9 p.m. Friday, August 18. This year, the Detroit Tigers take on the Cleveland Indians. The picnic starts at 5:30 p.m. on the Chevrolet Pavilion, and the game begins at 7:10 p.m. Guests will be able to enjoy a buffet that includes hot dogs, boneless chicken wings, Little Caesars Pizza (served in the 5th inning), vegetable spring rolls, Lay’s potato chips, Pepsi products, water, domestic beer and house wine. The actual cost for the picnic and ticket to the game is $52. A minimum donation of $125 is being asked for each ticket. The remaining $73 will be a tax-deductible gift to the Mark Weiss and M. Jon Posner Memorial Scholarship Fund. Register for tickets at https://law.wayne.edu/. Tickets will be mailed directly to you through July 19. If a purchase is made the week of the game, pick up your tickets from the Office of Special Events and Services at Wayne State University.
