Back in May, I wrote about my plans to run in the Mercy Health Seaway Run’s new 10K distance. I’m happy to report that I completed it and it was great! The course followed the 5K route through Terrace Point at the beginning, then headed out towards Hartshorn Marina and along one of my favorite sections of the Lakeshore Recreational trail. After a couple of up and down hills by Cole’s (love that smell!) and a turn through Nims neighborhood, the course headed back toward Western Avenue and the finish. I love the finish run up Western, with its great cheering section of already finished runners at Pigeon Hill! Runners encouraging other runners (and walkers) is such an awesome thing! It gave life to my tired legs to finish strong. I was rewarded at the finish line with a Frosty from Wendy’s and chocolate milk – what a treat!

One of the best things about the Seaway Run is the sense of community. Runners and walkers of all levels are encouraged to participate, in the spirit of building a healthy community. Families participate together and schools form running clubs to help kids feel confident about taking part. Crowds line he streets with fun signs and noisemakers, and the water/aid stations are full of spirited volunteers!

This year’s event had 2,873 participants, ranging in age from 1 to 84 years old! While the majority of participants were from Michigan, there were 26 states, plus a Canadian province, also represented. What a great way to share our beautiful place with visitors, with a fun, healthy event that showcases our downtown and shorelines.

Mark your calendar for next year’s Mercy Health Seaway Run – June 22, 2019 – and join us as we run and walk our way to a healthier community!
