Lawmaker won’t face criminal charge for gun inside airport
PELSTON, Mich. (AP) — A northern Michigan lawmaker will not face criminal charges for carrying a loaded handgun through pre-flight screening at an Emmet County airport.
The Petoskey News-Review reports Monday that Prosecutor James Linderman said in a release that he won’t charge state Rep. Lee Chatfield because Michigan’s law is not current with federal law in defining where inside airports guns are prohibited.
Chatfield is a Republican from Levering, south of Mackinaw City.
Security staff at Pellston Regional Airport found the gun July 15 in a carry-on bag. The gun was confiscated. Chatfield was questioned and later released.
Linderman said the gun had not been registered — a civil infraction.
Chatfield has said he accidently left the gun in the bag and later registered it.
Chatfield faces Bruce Newville in Tuesday’s Republican primary for the state House seat.
Tons of sawmill debris being removed from Muskegon Lake
MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) — Sawmill debris from Michigan’s early logging era is being removed from Muskegon Lake as part of a long-term environmental cleanup project.
Work began recently to retrieve almost 123,000 tons (111,584 metric tons) of wood dumped into the lake by 47 mills that operated there during the 1800s. It’s expected to continue through September.
The Muskegon Chronicle reports the goal is to restore habitat for fish, including the endangered lake sturgeon.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is funding the $2.8 million project through a partnership with the Great Lakes Commission.
It will restore 11.4 acres (4.6 hectares) of open water and emergent wetlands.
Kathy Evans of the West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission says the cleanup will boost a multi-year effort to get Muskegon Lake off a list of the Great Lakes region’s most highly polluted sites.

U.S. District Court for Eastern Michigan Judge Victoria Roberts will be honored with a portrait unveiling ceremony from 3-4:30 p.m. Friday, August 10 in Courtroom 100 at the Theodore Levin U.S.
Courthouse, 231 W. Lafayette in Detroit. The public is invited to attend. Ceremony will start promptly so arrive early for security clearance. The portrait ceremony, a tradition for veteran federal judges, will coincide with Judge Roberts’ 20th anniversary on the federal bench. She was appointed in 1998 by President Bill Clinton.
