Top enforcement officers from the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission, Federal Reserve Board and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau along with federal bankruptcy judges and industry experts will be among panelists featured at the American Bar Association Business Law Section Annual Meeting 2018, Sept. 13-15, in Austin, Texas.
A highlight of the three-day conference will be Friday's Section Luncheon, which will feature keynote speaker Ret. Admiral Bobby Ray Inman, Lyndon B. Johnson Centennial Chair in National Policy at the University of Texas, from 12:30-2 p.m. at the Fairmont Austin Hotel. Inman formerly served as director of the National Security Agency and as deputy director of Central Intelligence. He helped lead the Austin technology boom as chairman, president, chief executive officer and investor of several startup companies.
Program highlights include:
"Annual Antitrust Update for Business Lawyers" - Expert antitrust practitioners from the United States and Europe will provide an update geared specifically for business lawyers and focused on key antitrust developments, including in the areas of mergers, criminal and civil antitrust enforcement actions as well as case law.
"Autonomous Car Crashes Who or What Dunnit? Will IP and Cybersecurity Lawyers Replace PI Lawyers in Sorting Out the Legal Issues?" - Panelists will focus on autonomous vehicles and who may be liable when a crash occurs. Auto industry, regulatory and cyberspace attorneys will discuss the many potential liabilities arising with original equipment manufacturers, software design and the use of AI in autonomous vehicles.
"What's the Latest with Unaccompanied Minor Immigrants, and How Can You Help?" - This program will provide an overview of current legal needs of unaccompanied minor immigrants. Panelists will then explore the substantive law related to the legal needs to give attendees a foundation of knowledge for pro bono assistance to this group.
"Global Cyber Security and Data Privacy A Look At GDPR, Managing an International Privacy Program and Cross-Border Data Transfers" - This program will include an examination of the newly effective General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), as well as a look at the basics of managing an international privacy program, especially in light of GDPR. Panelists will also provide tips for preparing, collecting, using and transferring data across borders, particularly EU-US cross-border transfers.
"Securities on Blockchain: UCC and Other Considerations" - Blockchain technology is being adopted by securities intermediaries, but what are the regulatory, bankruptcy and commercial law issues that should be considered? Panelists will also analyze the application of UCC Article 8 to blockchain securities.
"Managing Data Privacy Across Borders and Other Hot Topics for International Banks" - This panel will cover recent developments regarding several hot topics for international banks, including an overview of recent international developments in data privacy laws, including the GDPR, and how to effectively manage privacy compliance across jurisdictions; the recent Volcker Rule proposal and industry approaches to issues of particular interest to international banks; and recent developments with respect to other U.S. prudential requirements affecting international banks operating in the U.S.
