Judge says Flint stabbing trial will not be moved
FLINT (AP) — A judge has rejected a request to move the trial of a man who is accused of stabbing a police officer at the Flint airport.
Judge Linda Parker says the jury pool in Flint federal court is drawn from 750,000 people. She said there are plenty of people who can give Amor Ftouhi a fair trial.
Ftouhi’s lawyers had asked to move the Nov. 5 trial to Detroit where the jury pool is even larger and where people might not have heard about the dramatic attack in June 2017.
Ftouhi is a native of Tunisia who lives in Montreal. He’s accused of stabbing Lt. Jeff Neville while yelling “Allahu Akbar,” the Arabic phrase for “God is great.” Neville survived.
Judge’s son gets 10-year prison term in child porn case
GRAND RAPIDS (AP) — The son of a Michigan Court of Appeals judge has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for possessing child pornography.
Prosecutors say Sameer Gadola exploited teen boys by urging them to send photos of themselves. His lawyers say Gadola made “terrible mistakes” when he was 21 years old but didn’t share the photos with anyone or meet the victims.
Gadola, now 23, is the son of Mike Gadola, an appeals court judge and Gov. Rick Snyder's former lawyer. His mother, Preeti Gadola, hears property appeals at the Michigan Tax Tribunal.
Sameer Gadola was sentenced Monday by Grand Rapids federal Judge Janet Neff. Prosecutors were seeking at least 15 1/2 years in prison.
Gadola's lawyers say he has significant mental disabilities and would benefit from additional treatment.
Agreement halts pipeline on one Louisiana tract
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The company building an oil pipeline through environmentally sensitive south Louisiana has agreed to halt the project on one piece of private land while a legal dispute plays out.
Landowner Peter Aalestad filed a state court lawsuit saying evidence showed Bayou Bridge Pipeline LLC had already begun tree-clearing and other construction preparation without obtaining consent.
Environmentalists hailed Monday’s agreement, saying it will delay completion of the pipeline until after a November hearing on company efforts to obtain the property through a process called expropriation.
Energy Transfer Partners in Dallas, the majority owner of the project, said in an email that the agreement will not affect the timing of the project’s completion. It has said in court records it expects to complete construction by October.
Worker charged with eating deli profits
BOLIVAR, Ohio (AP) — Authorities in eastern Ohio say a grocery store employee has been charged with felony theft for helping herself to deli ham for years.
Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Hale tells The Columbus Dispatch that an eight-year employee of regional grocery chain Giant Eagle was charged Friday with stealing food estimated by the store to be worth $9,200.
The store’s loss prevention manager received a tip that an employee had been eating three to five slices of ham nearly every day over eight years. Authorities say she also sometimes ate salami.
The store is in Bolivar, some 70 miles south of Cleveland.
