The Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association (MIPLA) hosted its September Lunch &?Learn featuring Mary Boney Denison (second from right), the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office commissioner for trademarks, who spoke on the “State of the Trademark Office.” She covered some rulemakings in the works, hiring, Chinese filings, and the post-registration audit. Happy to welcome Denison to the Sept. 7 luncheon at the Skyline Club in Southfield were (l-r) David Berry of Brooks Kushman PC, MIPLA President Rachel Smith of Brooks Kushman, and Daniel Hegner of Bejin Bieneman PLC. Denison joined the USPTO in 2011 as deputy commissioner for Trademark Operations where she was responsible for USPTO trademark application, legal examination, and registration processes. She has led outreach to the trademark legal community, small businesses, and applicants without legal counsel, and has been an active participant in meetings with the world’s largest trademark offices, promoting projects aimed at harmonizing trademark practices and procedures.
