Court rejects appeal over election law
DETROIT (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court won’t intervene in a dispute over Michigan’s ban on straight-party voting.
The court recently turned down an appeal, which means the ban will go into effect in the November election. Voters can’t use a single mark to quickly pick all candidates of a single party.
A Detroit federal judge said the ban violated the rights of black voters. But an appeals court suspended that decision and said the ruling likely will be overturned.
The Supreme Court rejected an appeal, although justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg wanted to hear it.

Judge orders quick action on graphic cigarette warnings
BOSTON (AP) — A federal judge is ordering the Food and Drug Administration to quickly finish writing a rule requiring graphic warnings on cigarette packages and advertisements.
Judge Indira Talwani in Boston says the FDA hasn’t worked fast enough to issue new requirements after previous graphic warnings were struck down in 2012 when challenged by tobacco companies.
She’s giving the FDA until later this month to provide an expedited schedule for finalizing the graphic warnings rule.
Her ruling came in a case brought by several public health and medical groups in 2016.
Graphic warning labels with color images were mandated a law passed in 2009.
Fountain on Detroit’s Belle Isle getting $400K in upgrades
DETROIT (AP) — A historic fountain on Belle Isle will get $400,000 in upgrades following a charity fundraiser that was held as part of the Detroit Grand Prix.
The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear has announced that efforts to keep the James Scott Memorial Fountain operating will get nearly half of the roughly $1 million raised for the Belle Isle Conservancy during the 2018 Grand Prixmiere, a major fundraiser for the island park.
The marble fountain was designed by architect Cass Gilbert. Over the years it fell into disrepair, but efforts have increased in recent years to improve the attraction.
Last month, Michigan's Department of Natural and race organizers announced an agreement to keep the Grand Prix on Belle Isle for at least three more years.
Man buys Slim Jims for his dog, lottery ticket, wins $10M
FORT EDWARD, N.Y. (AP) — A New York man will be living large thanks to his decision to buy some Slim Jims for his dog.
New York Lottery officials say 73-year-old Dale Farrand recently won the $10 million prize on a Cash Spectacular scratch-off ticket.
The Fort Edward man says he bought a $30 ticket at a local Cumberland Farms convenience store while buying Slim Jims snacks for his dog Boots.
He scratched the ticket in his car and realized he was a winner.
Farrand will receive a lump-sum payment of $6.7 million after required withholdings.
