Michigan again extends deadline for marijuana businesses
LANSING (AP) — The state of Michigan has again extended the deadline for medical marijuana businesses to be licensed.
Gov. Rick Snyder on Tuesday signed new emergency rules allowing 108 facilities to operate until Dec. 15 as long as they have secured local approval. Ninety-eight businesses, mostly dispensaries, will be sent cease-and-desist letters if they are still open after this weekend because they did not request a license or failed to move to a second step.
This is the third time the state has changed deadlines as it implements a 2016 law requiring a state license to operate a medical marijuana business.
Fire department shutting off lights, sirens on some runs
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Fire Department is allowing its crews to shut off lights and sirens on emergency vehicles during some less-urgent calls.
Detroit Fire Commissioner Eric Jones tells The Detroit News that disregarding traffic signals and speed limits while activating lights and sirens on every run is unnecessarily dangerous.
The newspaper says the policy, which began last month, gives discretion to dispatchers, firefighters and EMTs to alert those en route to switch off their lights and sirens. It classifies runs as emergent runs or non-life threatening calls. Previously, fire crews responded to all calls with lights and sirens.
Police: Man stole ambulance after getting out of hospital
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man needed a ride home when he was released from the hospital. So police say he stole an ambulance.
But the ambulance had a GPS tracking device, so it was easily found on Sunday. Now 25-year-old Michael Paul is staying at the Broward
County Jail, charged with grand theft and driving without a valid license.
Broward Sheriff’s spokeswoman Joy Oglesby tells news outlets Paul told arresting deputies that he stole the ambulance because he needed a car. She says he took the red ambulance as paramedics were checking another patient into the emergency room at Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach on Sunday.
Deputies tracked down the ambulance within 30 minutes about nine miles from the hospital in Deerfield beach.
Hundreds of fun-loving bicyclists ride nude
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Hundreds of fun-loving bicyclists spent the afternoon gearing up for a ride around Philadelphia and then took off — their clothes.
Some of the nude cyclists sported body paint, glitter or fancy hats on Saturday as they made the annual Philly Naked Bike Ride. They pedaled 10 miles through the streets of the City of Brotherly Love past sights including Independence Hall, the U.S. Mint and the Liberty Bell and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Participants in the ride can go as bare as they dare. Some were in their birthday suits while others wore underwear or masks.
The bike ride is to protest dependence on fossil fuels, advocate for the safety of cyclists on the road and promote positive body image.
