Event celebrates Spirit of Detroit sculpture anniversary

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit-Wayne Joint Building Authority is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the dedication of the Spirit of Detroit sculpture.

A free program is scheduled Friday, Sept. 21, at the sculpture outside the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center in downtown Detroit.

The sculpture by artist Marshall Fredericks was commissioned in 1955. The bronze cast was made in Norway and shipped to Detroit where the 26-foot-tall  sculpture was dedicated in September 1958.

About $170,000 in restoration improvements were made to the sculpture in time for its 50th anniversary.

Law school schedules open house for prospective students

The Auburn Hills campus of Western Michigan University Cooley Law School will host an open house for students and guests on Thursday, Sept. 27.

The event, which begins at 5:30 p.m., will feature a discussion with staff and students, information about academic programs and scholarships, and campus tours.

“The open house is a terrific opportunity to learn what we are really all about—an excellent practical legal education—one that has graduates hitting the ground running with the knowledge, skills, and ethics in place for success,” said Joan Vestrand, associate dean.

Accidental school shooting prompts possible clear bag rule

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — A school district in Alabama is considering implementing a clear backpack policy following the accidental shooting of a student who brought a gun to his elementary school.

WHNT-TV reports Huntsville City Schools Superintendent Christie Finley says the policy will make it difficult for students to bring prohibited items on campus.

Huntsville Police Chief Mark McMurray has said a “small student” brought the gun to school Monday and was shot in the hand while showing it to other students.

He says the shooting at the Blossomwood Elementary School was accidental.

Police say the firearm was traced to the child's father, who was charged with receiving stolen property and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Too soon??Fans find Red Sox division title banner in street

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have not clinched this year's American League East division championship, but a banner marking the accomplishment has already been accidentally unveiled.

Friends Louie Iacuzzi, James Amaral and Randy Baldasarri tell WFXT-TV they were out for coffee in Somerville early Monday when they spotted something in the road.

As they peeled off the brown paper wrapping, they thought it was jerseys. The three Red Sox fans were stunned to find out it was the American League East division title banner.

A Red Sox spokesman said the banner apparently fell off a vendor's delivery truck. The team sent a courier to retrieve it.
